1975 – T. rex arrives in Springfield

In 1975, a monstrous Tyrannosaurus rex model arrived at the Springfield Science Museum. The fiberglass model was made from a prototype used for Sinclair Oil’s famous 1964-65 World’s Fair dinosaurs. Its head alone weighed 400 pounds.

The Springfield Exchange Club raised $19,000 to purchase the T. rex from the original molds, and subsequent fundraising efforts renovated the hall where the ‘tyrant lizard king’ still stands today. The model was officially unveiled to the public on April 24th, 1975.
