2015 – Archaeornithura described
On this day in dinosaurs, a 130 million year old fossil took flight in the imagination of scientists and the general public alike. Archaeornithura shows just how far the bird lineage evolved from Archaeopteryx 20 million years earlier.
Scientists believe that Archaeornithura is the earliest known member of the lineage that became modern birds. Along with full plumage, this early flyer seems to have been adapted to life on the shoreline, like today’s plovers.
