2014 – Zby described

On this day in dinosaurs, a mysterious sauropod from Portugal appeared in the literature for the first time.

Zby, named after Georges Zbyzewski who studied Portuguese geology and paleontology, seems to be related to Turiasaurus, found in Spain. With only a few skeletal elements discovered, researchers had enough material to determine that Zby was different from other sauropods, yet its size could not be accurately estimated with the limited remains available.

Zby is the fourth Portuguese sauropod yet discovered, and paleontologists are still looking for additional specimens which can shed light on the true nature of these long-necked European giants.
